Macfarlane called Brown (of Haddington) "perhaps the most remarkable divine that our country has produced" (cited in Johnston, Treasury of the Scottish Covenant, p. 485).
In this book, which is divided into three sections, Brown gives a "general view of the figures of Scripture language," an "explication of metaphors respecting persons" and an "explication of metaphors respecting things."
He also notes that "the ensuing work contains a whole system of divine truth, represented in Scripture-metaphors."
