A fine defense of the Covenanted (classic Covenanter) position on civil matters: an answer to the errors of the Seceders regarding the civil magistrate, the covenants and the position of the Westminster Assembly concerning these matters.
It is curious that, at one point (see page 72), M'Millan rebukes the Seceders for censuring in Reformed Presbyterian teaching what they (the Seceders) call "Antiscriptural" and "Antigovernment" -- which, when set forth by one of their own noteworthy divines, they completely overlook. In fact M'Millan calls upon the Seceders to read one of the best books penned by their own number as preparation to answer this letter he has written -- because the Seceder author he refers to was much closer to the Covenanted Reformed Presbyterian position that to the Seceder's errant doctrine. What book did he call upon his opponents to read? None other than John Brown's (of Haddington) The Absurdity and Perfidy of All Authoritative Toleration of Gross Heresy, Blasphemy, Idolatry,Popery, in Britain.
In two letters to a friend in which the doctrine of the Westminster Confession of Faith relative to Toleration of a False Religion, and the power of the civil magistrate about sacred matters; and the nature, origin, ends and obligation of the National Covenant and Solemn League are candidly represented and defended.
