The Scots Worthies, by John Howie, covers the life and times of the most notable Scottish Reformers from 1503 to just after 1688.
Howie's grandfather personally witnessed some of the momentous times chronicled in this book, and lived until Howie was twenty. "We can easily, without much stretch of the imagination, picture to ourselves the old man in his chair, with the boy standing, before him, while the former related to his eager listener some of those incidents in which he himself had taken a part," notes the editor.
This is the revised edition, edited by Carslaw (1870). It includes numerous illustrations. Later editors, like Carslaw, removed Howie's appendix titled "The Judgment and Justice of God" (which chronicles God's judgments upon apostates and those who persecuted the Covenanters); but we have added the original appendix back into this volume.
Howie's footnotes have also been removed from this edition and can only be found (in print today) in the 1781 edition of the book (titled Biographia Scoticana) which we (SWRB) also keep in print and which is available on this site (PuritanDownloads.com).
