(Ralph Turnbull, Johnathan Edwards the Preacher, 1958). But there is no escaping that this doctrine received a priority with Edwards maybe unequaled in no other author. He wrote that if he represented the truth as WORSE than it in fact is, he is very much to be blamed, but if he only held forth more light, the reality was infinitely more dreadful than he could represent it. The picture of a brick-kiln alone in this sermon gives an idea so awful it is almost overwhelming if in any proper degree duly comprehended. But he builds layer upon layer of an awful reality that no one in this life can meditate on with any degree of complacency, only with terror. 2 Cor. 5:11 The wicked who hear it must either be convicted or enraged, it would be impossible to be indifferent.
