The Works of Ebenezer Erskine, volume one, contains:
I. - God's little remnant keeping their garments clean in an evil day. Thou hast a few names in Sardis, which have not defiled their garments; and tbey shall walk with me in white, for they are worthy.- Rev. iii. 4.
II. - The backslider characterized: or, the evil and danger of defection described. Heb. x. 38.--If any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him.
III. - The wind of the Holy Ghost blowing upon the dry bones m the valley of vision. Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe upon these slain, that they may live. - Ezek. xxxvii. 9.
IV. - The King is held in the galleries. The King is held in the galleries. - Song of Sol. vii- 5.
V. - The groans of believers under their burdens. Psal. Xxxviii. 9.--Lord, all my desire is before thee; and my groaning is not hid from thee. Rom. Viii. 26.--The Spirit helpeth our infirmities and maketh intercession for us, with groanings which cannot be uttered. We that are in this tabernacle do groan, being burdened. - 2 Cor. v. 4.
VI. - The believer exalted in imputed righteousness. Isa. Xlv. 24, 25.--Surely, shall one say, in the Lord have I righteousness and strength, even to him shall men come; and all that are incensed against him shall be ashamed. In the Lord shall all the seed of Israel be justified, and shall glory.
VII. - The humble soul the peculiar favourite of heaven. Job xxii. 29.--When men are cast down, then thou shalt say, There is lifting up, and he shall save the humble person. 1 Pet. V. 5,6.--Be clothed with humility, for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time. Though the Lord be high, yet hath he respect unto the lowly: but the proud he knoweth afar off. - Psal. cxxxviii. 6.
VIII. - The necessity and profitableness of good works asserted. 2 Cor. vii. 1.--Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God. Rev. xxii. 14.--Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city. John vii. 17.--If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.
IX. Christ in the believer's arms. Psal. lxxiii. 25. Whom have I in heaven but thee? And there is none upon earth that I desire besides thee. Luke ii. 28.--Then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God.
X. - A discourse on the throne of grace. Justice and judgment are the habitation of thy throne - Psal. Ixxxix. 14.
XI. - The assurance of faith, opened and applied. Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way which he hath consecrated for us through the vail, that is to say his flesh; and having an high priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart, in full assurance of faith. - Heb. x. 19, 22.
XII.- God in Christ, a God of love. God is love. - 1 John iv. 16.
XIII. - Unbelief arraigned and condemned at the bar of God. John xvi. 8, 9.--And when he is come, he will convince the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment of sin; because they believe not on me. He that believeth not, is condemned already. - John iii. 18.
XIV. - The day-spring from on high. Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the day-spring from on high hath visited us. - Luke i. 78.
XV. - The rainbow of the covenant surrounding the throne of grace. And there was a rainbow round about the throne in sight like unto an emerald. - Rev. iv. 3.
XVI. - The tree of life shaking his fruits and leaves among the nations. In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month, and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. - Rev. xxii. 2.
XVII. - The law of faith issuing forth from mount Zion. For the law shall go out of Zion. - Isa. ii. 3.
XVIII.- The stone rejected by the builders exalted as tbe head-stone of the corner. The stone which the builders rejected, the same is made the head-stone of the corner. - Psal. cxviii. 22.
